Jahrestag

February 10th 1962 - The first East-West agent exchange on the Glienicker Bridge in Berlin

Once there was a wooden bridge here. In 1908/1909 it was replaced by the iron structure of the Glienicker Bridge. Blown up in April of 1945 by the Wehrmacht, the Glienicker bridge connecting the cities of Berlin and Potsdam, after its reconstruction, became the sight of the first exchange of spies from East and West during the Cold War, on February 10th 1962. On that day, during the winter of 1962, the American spy Francis Gary Powers was exchanged for the top KGB spy Rudolf Abel. Powers was shot down in 1960 during a reconnaissance flight over the Soviet Union. Abel had created an extensive spy network in the U.S., which was busted in 1957.
