July 22nd 1969 - Dictator Franco appoints Juan Carlos as his successor

At the end of World War II Francisco Franco remains as the last fascist dictator in Europe. The images are deceptive. Franco’s reign is based on terror and violence. More than 100,000 people, dissidents are killed immediately after the Civil War or disappear without a trace during the Franco dictatorship. The majority of the population lives in poverty under Franco. During the Cold War, Francos position of power consolidates. In particular the United States are now looking to be close to the declared anti-Communist. In 1947 the dictator declares the monarchy in Spain and himself sovereign for life. He leaves his succession open for many years. On July 22nd 1969 he finally reveals himself to the Spanish nation and appoints the young heir Juan Carlos as his successor not suspecting that Juan Carlos as a ruler will not continue the dictatorship of Spain but lead it into a parliamentary democracy.
