March 28th 1939 - End of the Spanish Civil War

March 28th 1939: The Spanish Civil War ends with the occupation of Madrid by Francos troops. It had begun with Franco's coup against the newly elected left wing Popular Front government in 1936. The Popular Front had deposed of Franco as a commander in chief and had exiled him to the Canary Islands. From there he called for a coup. Government organizations fought together with international brigades on the side of the Republic. The war plans of the revolting military were supported by the German and Italian fascists. The murderous air raid of the "Legion Condor" on the small Spanish town of Guernica in 1937 gave the world a taste of the brutality with which Hitler and the Germans intended to carry out the looming World war. But Franco does not participate in it. He opposes Hitler and declares Spain's neutrality when the war begins in September 1939. His reason: The civil war had weakened and destroyed the country so much that Spain could not fight at all.
