December 5th 1941 - Soviet counteroffensive during the Battle of Moscow

December 5th 1941: With a massive counter attack the Soviet High Command brings the German attack on Moscow to halt. Stalin uses no fewer than 1,400 aircraft, 700 tanks and over a million soldiers for this operation during the Second World War. And he succeeds. The German army, ill prepared for the Russian winter, has to stop their offensive and move to defense. Hitler refuses to order a general retreat back to the initial positions, which is recommended by his consultants. In a “Führer- order” given on December 18th 1941, he calls for a "fanatical resistance" and appoints himself as commander in chief. In vain. Not only was the Red Army able to recapture many strategically important bases by the end of the year, but they also cause heavy losses amongst the enemy. Given this precarious situation, Hitler finally gives the order to retreat on January 15th 1942.
