February 5th 1919 – The Deutsche Luftreederei opens air passenger traffic between Berlin and Weimar

February 5th 1919: The Deutsche Luftreederei (German Air Freight Service), a forerunner of todays Lufthansa airline inaugurates the first regular passenger service between Berlin and Weimar. The transport of passengers by air was still a sensation then. Although there was already an air transportation network in Germany before the First World War it initially remained limited to local destinations due to the outbreak of the war. Foreign competitors with the introduction of international connections provided for a real upswing after 1918. England for example introduces a passenger and mail service between London and Paris. France follows with a connection between Toulouse and Barcelona. A true boom in civil aviation is triggered in the United States. By the end of the twenties it not only outperforms its European competitors in the number of aircraft companies (or “airlines”) but also completes twice as many flights.
