September 6th 1939 - German army occupies Krakow

September 6th 1939: Almost a week after Hitlers invasion of Poland the German army – seen here during the victory parade in Warsaw – occupies the old royal city of Krakow. The historic tomb of the Jagiellonian dynasty henceforth not only became the administrative center of the German General Government by the same name but also reflected Hitler's conception of Sub-humanism in a barbaric manner. Leading minds of science and culture were arrested and deported public institutions closed and the Jewish population put in a ghetto on the orders of the Nazi governor Hans Frank. Of the 70000 affected hardly any survived the German occupation. It only came to an end after the Soviet invasion in January of 1945.
