June 12th 1900 - Second German Naval Law establishes sea rivalry with England

 

June 12th 1900: The adoption of the Second Fleet Act by the Reichstag exacerbates the contrast between Kaiser Wilhelm II and Great Britain. The decision to double the German battle fleet is seen in London as a threat to the British supremacy at sea. Wilhelm II clearly did not recognize the danger which arose from this for his already largely isolated kingdom. An alliance with the island state, which he wished for, did not come to be, but rather Entente Cordiale, which the British government concluded with France in 1904, which Russia also joined in 1907. Furthermore an arms race began which prevented much needed communications and helped to pave the way to the First World War.
