February 13th 1945 -Air raid on Dresden

February 13th 1945: The beginning of the air raid on Dresden, one of the worst attacks of Allied bombers on German cities during World War II. A total of four attack waves of washed over the city on the Elbe River and put it in ruins. The firestorm triggered by the bombing cost many people their lives. The fact that many refugees were in the city during the attack, makes it, according to some critics today, a war crime. The bombing, carried out by British, Canadian and American pilots, lasted until February 15th. During the first night alone three quarters of the historic old town were destroyed, during which over 2000 tons of explosives were dropped on the city. Daylight raids of the U.S. Air Force followed on February 14th and 15th, which, among other buildings, the famous Frauenkirche (Church of Our Lady) fell victim to. Dresden is a symbol today for the suffering of the civilian population. The attack, directed against strategic targets, primarily hit civilians and leads to the question of how carpet-bombing can be ethically justified.
