December 16th 1944 - Battle of the Bulge

 

December 16th 1944: Beginning of the so-called “Battle of the Bulge”, the last major German operation on the Western Front in World War II. For the implementation Hitler pulled together 200,000 troops, which were supported by about 600 tanks and 1,900 cannons. As with the Western campaign in 1940 they were to push through heavily forested mountains, in order to take the cities of Brussels and Antwerp, both important to the Allied supply, after they had crossed the Meuse. Initially the starting position appeared favorable. Not only were the attackers superior to their opponents in numbers, but the Allied air superiority could also not be exploited due to weather. The campaign failed, however. After an initial success on the German side the Allies managed bringing in more troops. Hitlers offensive came to a halt because of supply problems and had to be aborted with heavy losses on December 27th '
