October 20th 1944 - Red Army captures Belgrade

October 20th 1944: Liberation of Belgrade, the capital of Yugoslavia, by the Red Army. It was the climax of the so-called Belgrade operation. The operation had begun at the end of September 1944 under the leadership of the Soviet marshal Fyodor Ivanovich Tolbuch. A massive deployment of men and material occurred, to liberate Yugoslavia from German occupation. On October 14th the first Red Army troops already reached the southern city limits. On the evening of the following day large parts of the city were already freed. On October 20th with the capture of Kalemegdan fortress, the last bit of German resistance was finally eliminated. A destruction of Belgrade by Soviet military did not occur, because of the consideration for the Yugoslav comrades. The city was to be the seat of government for the new leader Josip Broz Tito, who from here guided the development of his federal Peoples Republic of Yugoslavia. '
