July 29th 1889 - Ernst Reuter is born

Ernst Reuter was born on July 29th 1889. Immediately following his election as mayor of Magdeburg in 1931 the Social democrat stands up for social programs. But the seizure of power by the Nazis foils his plans. Reuter, via the UK, goes into exile in Ankara. At the Turkish citys University he teaches as professor of municipal studies until 1939. After the 2nd World War Reuter returns to Germany in 1947 and is elected the first mayor of West Berlin. In 1948 during the Berlin blockade he gathered 300.000 Berlin around him and says the now famous words: O-Ton Reuter (No Texts were given – no translation?) Thanks to the Airlift the people of Berlin are able to withstand the Soviet provocation. But during the blockade the division between East and West is manifested. Reuter moves from the Red City Hall in the east to the west of part the city. There he is elected the first mayor of West Berlin in 1951.
