March 25th 1957 - EEC Treaty of Rome

On March 25th 1957 the Excellencies and Presidents of six European states sign the Treaty which establishes the European Economic Community (EEC) in Rome. In addition to the Benelux countries, France, Italy and the Federal Republic of Germany are the founding countries of the EEC. They begin to put an idea into action, of which British Prime Minister Winston Churchill had already dreamt after the end of World War II, the United Nations of Europe. In the early 1950s it was the young people at first who with their international encounters advanced their European idea across borders. Some European countries had a harder time than their own youth. For example the United Kingdom only joined the EEC in 1973.
