January 24th 1962 - Tunnel escape from East to West Berlin

On January 24th 1962, 28 Berliners manage to escape through a 27-meter-long tunnel, which they had dug themselves, from east to west Berlin. The spectacular escape beneath the wall is followed by further tunnel escapes. In the first half of 1962, a total of 60 East Berliners are able to escape through 6 tunnels underneath the wall. But the escapes claim human lives: In March of 1962 a person helping the escapees is shot dead and three months later, a police sergeant of the East German “Peoples Police” is killed. The East German border patrols now refine their monitoring and protection methods. By the end of 1962 only one of eight attempted tunnel escapes succeeds. 20 people willing to escape are arrested and another escapee helper loses his life. Nevertheless East Germans try again and again to dig themselves through to West Berlin.
