May 5th 1977 - Ludwig Erhard dies

 

On May 5th 1977 Ludwig Erhard dies. After the 2nd World War, the economic specialist first becomes adviser to the American military authorities in Nuremberg. In 1948, he prepares the West German currency reform which triggers a surprising economic boom in the Western occupation zones, leading to an "economic miracle" in the Federal Republic of Germany during the 1950s. Its citizens very closely identify their growing prosperity and economic advancement, with his person. Erhard became the first Secretary of Commerce of the Federal Republic. Erhard is considered the "father of the D-Mark" and founder of the social market economy. In 1963, Ludwig Erhard follows Konrad Adenauer as chancellor. (Oton) In 1965 he wins the parliamentary elections against Willy Brandt unexpectedly high, despite some criticism of his uncertain leadership style. (Oton) Nevertheless, Erhard remains a transition Chancellor. And the economists shortcomings in foreign policy emerge more clearly. Ultimately the coalition of the CDU and FDP breaks apart due to fiscal disputes. Ludwig Erhard resigns. As guardian of the social market economy he remains present in the public eye until his death.
