November 3rd 1918 - Sailors mutiny in Kiel

1918 towards the end of World War I preliminary negotiations for a ceasefire had already been initiated. Nevertheless, the leadership of the German Navy gave the order to the fleet for a final naval battle, without any consultation of the government in Wilhelmshaven. The war-weary sailors rehearsed the uprising and refused to follow the order. They were arrested and taken to Kiel. There, an uprising broke out on November 3rd. Following the Soviet model, spontaneously formed soldier- and worker-councils took over political power in many German cities. Ever louder they called for the end of the war, the abdication of the emperor and the democratization of economy, society and military.
