November 10th 1918 - First republican government in Germany

 

On November 10th 1918 the first republican government of Germany is established in. The back-story: On November 9th Chancellor Max von Baden proclaimed arbitrarily the abdication of the emperor. Wilhelm II fled to the Netherlands. There, three weeks later, he signs the abdication papers. Friedrich Ebert, the SPD chairman and spokesman of the strongest parliamentary party, was the new head of government. He wanted to hold all political changes until after a constituent National Assembly was elected. But the call for immediate changes became ever louder. In order to prevent a power vacuum, the SPD deputy to the Reichstag, Philipp Scheidemann from a window of the Reichstag, proclaimed the German Republic on November 9th (O-Ton) With that Scheidemann pre-empted the leader of the Independent Social Democrats, Karl Liebknecht. Two hours later he proclaimed, from a balcony of the Berlin Palace, the "Free Socialist Republic of Germany" and urged the population to complete the "world revolution". A transitional government was finally formed on November 10th, the "Council of Peoples Representatives". To it belonged each three representatives of the SPD and the Independent Socialists. '
