Jahrestag

April 22nd 1946 - Founding of the SED

The Soviet occupation deliberately worked towards guaranteeing the supremacy of communist forces in their zone. Back in early May of 1945, when the surrender was already foreseeable, a group of German Communists in exile were flown into the Soviet zone of occupation. The group was headed by former communist member of parliament Walter Ulbricht, who had been living in Moscow since 1938. From Ulbricht stems the statement: "It has to look democratic, but we must have everything in our hands." . The Communist Party pushed the merger with the SPD in order to neutralize their supposedly closest competitor. Kurt Schumacher, leading politician of the SPD-West, warned against the merger. Initially the SPD in the Soviet zone wanted to decide on a merger after a party congress including all of Germany. But it turned out differently. On the 21st and 22nd of April 1946 the so-called “Unity Congress” was held in Berlin. As a result of threats and persuasions, the chairman of the SPD-East Otto Grotewohl and the entire Board, voted unanimously for the merger of the KPD and SPD to form the Socialist Unity Party of Germany, the SED.
