Jahrestag

September 30th 1989 - GDR allows Embassy refugees to leave the GDR

The disregard for civil rights and liberties, the disastrous living and working conditions, the bankrupt state economy and the inability to reform the leadership of the SED, prompted mostly young East Germans to only see one way out: to flee to the West. (Wall, refugee), In its way was still the wall and the “shoot to kill” order of the East German border guards. In 1989, refugees were shot at the wall during an escape attempt. Almost only seniors were given a travel permit. During the summer and autumn of 1989, East German citizens occupied West German embassies in Prague, Budapest and Warsaw. After long negotiations between the Federal Government of West Germany and the East German government, on September 30th East Berlin finally allowed the emigration from the East German territory to West Germany.
