January 10th 1934 - Trial of the Reichstag Fire

On the night of the 27th to the 28th of February 1933 the Reichstag burns in Berlin, Germany. The fire department concludes it to be arson. The Dutch communist, Marinus van der Lubbe is arrested at the scene as the prime suspect. Politically, the fire has far-reaching consequences: the coalition led by the National Socialists and in power since January 30th takes the incident as a welcome pretext to eliminate political opponents. President Hindenburg is forced to sign a regulation that suspends fundamental rights. Primarily members of the Social Democratic Party and the Communist Party are interned at the first concentration camps. Under a new law an available sentence for arson is the death penalty. On September 21st, the trial begins before the Leipzig Supreme Court. (O-ton) The Nazis are trying to strongly influence the trial, which is successful only in part. (O-ton) On December 23rd Marinus van der Lubbe is sentenced to death. The other defendants, including Dimitrov are acquitted. Van der Lubbe is executed by guillotine January 10th 1934.
