April 2nd 1968 - Red Army Faction commits arson

The later members of the German terror organization Red Army Faction, or RAF, Andreas Baader and Gudrun Ensslin, seen here at a later arrest of Baaders in 1972 first stepped on to the scene with arson attacks on stores in Frankfurt in April of 1968. A part of the student movement had become radicalized after the shooting of Benno Ohnesorg by a policeman at the Shah demonstrations in Berlin on June 2nd 1967. "Violence against property" was discussed as a legitimate means of political protest. The perpetrators of the arson attacks Frankfurt were quickly caught - here's a subsequent arrest of RAF members from the year 1972 - and brought to justice. During the process they express their disdain of so called “class justice” and were outraged when they were sentenced like a common criminal. Before starting the prison sentence a number of the convicts were able to go into hiding in Paris. The arson attacks marked the beginning of a series of violent acts which continued until the self- disbandment of the RAF in 1998.
