(original sound bite) Schmidt "balance of forces" Chancellor Helmut Schmidt sees the nuclear balance threatened by the deployment of Soviet SS-20 missiles to Central Europe. On December 12th 1979 the North Atlantic Alliance adopts the so-called "Double Resolution". It links the opening of negotiations with the threat to deploy medium-range nuclear missiles in Central Europe, and even in the Federal Republic of Germany. Hundreds of thousands of the peace movement are mobilizing just in West Germany to protest against the resolution. Parts of the SPD oppose their chancellor. In 1981 Chancellor Helmut Schmidt connects his political fate with the approval of the SPD of the NATO twin-track decision. But the protests against the retrofitting remain and also become a first major challenge for chancellor Helmut Kohl: (original sound bite): Kohl The German Parliament agrees with the deployment in November 1983, with votes from the CDU / CSU and the FDP.
