December 14th, 1963 - Erich Ollenhauer dies

On December 14th, 1963 Erich Ollenhauer dies. A member of the SPD party since age 17, Ollenhauer is elected SPD chairman and parliamentary party leader of the Socialist-Democrats following the death of Kurt Schumacher in 1952. Ollenhauer committed himself against the rearmament of the Federal Republic subsequently submitting a plan which, instead of having military blocks in the East and West, would provide a European security system, with a reunified Germany acting as an equal partner at its center. Ollenhauer’s ideas as well as his political actions are deeply rooted in, and representative of, socialist ideas and traditions of the SPD as a workers party. (original sound bite) - Ollenhauer Due to the lack of success in elections of the SPD against Adenauer's CDU Ollenhauer carefully works within his party towards a change of direction which manifested itself in the adoption of the Godesberg Program in 1959 paving the way for the SPD to being a Party of the People.
