Jahrestag

November 16th, 1909 - DELAG - founding of the German Airship Corporation

In 1909, the first zeppelins are seen above Berlin, Germany. Its inventor, Graf Zeppelin, quickly recognized that his airships could also be used for the transportation of passengers. This required a company that would regulate air traffic. Thus, the General Director of the Zeppelin Group Alfred Colsman founded the “German Airship Corporation” on November 16th, 1909. The DELAG was based in Frankfurt am Main. A capital of initially three million marks, stemming from government aid as well as various sponsors, was available. In 1913, after initial difficulties, a transportation network had been established, connecting the most important German cities like Berlin, Hamburg and Frankfurt to each other.
