December 20th, 1963 - Auschwitz Trial

On December 20th, 1963, the first Auschwitz trial begins in Frankfurt am Main. More than 18 years after the end of World War II the West German judiciary begins a trial addressing the mass murders committed in Nazi concentration camps. After several years of tedious preparation, 22 defendants would stand trial. They were accused of crimes against humanity, abuse and of individual and mass killings of prisoners. After proceedings, which last 20 months, the jury sentences six defendants to life imprisonment while in all other cases, the verdicts were comparatively mild. Victims and Victims associations alike protested fiercely feeling their sense of justice had been deeply violated.
