Jahrestag

December 22nd, 1942 - Execution of key members of the resistance group “Rote Kapelle” (Red Orchestra)

On December 22nd, 1942 key members of the resistance group “Rote Kapelle” (Red Orchestra) are executed in Plötzensee. At the helm of the organization were Harro Schulze-Boysen and Arvid Harnack. Since 1933, resistance groups had been loosely forming around them. Ministerial officials and members of the Wehrmacht participated in the Schulze-Boysen/Harnack-Group, as did artists and workers. In the years 1940 to 1942 the “Rote Kapelle” was particularly active in the resistance. They started poster campaigns and spread leaflets with content critical of the regime. The "Rote Kapelle" wanted a quick end to the war, an agreement with the Soviet Union and the preservation of an independent, unified German national state as a mediator between East and West.
