October 30th, 2008 - Closure of Tempelhof Airport

October 30th, 2008, Berlin’s "Central Airport" Tempelhof closes down. Almost 100 years earlier, in 1909 the first flying machines landed at the Tempelhof field. In 1923, the former parade ground is made available to the expanding world of aviation. The first regularly scheduled flights between Berlin and Munich begin. The Junkers Company and the German Aero Lloyd merge in 1926 to form Deutsche Lufthansa. Tempelhof becomes their headquarters. In the 1930s, the Nazis have big plans for Tempelhof, turning the airfield into Berlins "Central Airport" and making Tempelhof their prestige project. In 1945 the Soviet troops find Tempelhof in complete destruction and devastation. The German commander surrenders. After the Potsdam Conference the Americans take over the airport in 1948 and 1949 the airport is instrumental in implementing the humanitarian air bridge created by the Allied forces supplying the population of the city with food during the Soviet blockade of West Berlin. In the 1950’s Berlin-Tempelhof along with London and Paris is one of Europe's most important commercial airports. Since Tempelhof’s runway cannot be extended to make it suitable for large jet aircrafts the airport loses more and more importance during the 1960’s. For smaller airplanes it continued to be an attractive airport especially because of its central location already drawing a number of protests and petitions in the run-up of the Tempelhof closure.
