Born in Remagen, he originally started out as a motorcyclist before he started racing cars in1922 on the Berlin Avus, shown here. The man known to all as "Caratsch", reached the highlight of his career in the 1930s. Driving for Mercedes and Alfa Romeo, he won many races at home and abroad, including Italy, Switzerland, France, Belgium, Spain and Monaco. With European Championships in 1935, 1937 and 1938, he was regarded as the most successful racer of his time. After World War II, however, Caracciola could not repeat the success of days past.
