January 13th, 1935 - Saarland votes for the annexation to the German Reich

January 13th, 1935: Two years after Hitler came to power, over 90% of the registered voters in the Saarland vote for the return of their homeland to the German Empire. For the National Socialists this first "annexation" of an area outside of the German territory proved to be a huge propaganda success. The poll, conducted under the supervision of commissioners of the League of Nations, was according to the provisions of the Versailles Treaty and resulted in the solemn recognition of the reincorporation in Geneva on March 1st 1935. With the election in favor of Germany, Frances last hopes for a territorial gain on its eastern border were dashed. Thus Hitler did not need to make concessions to Paris whereas France should retain the right to use the natural resources in the Saarland for its own industry.
