November 14th, 1940 - Destruction of the city of Coventry by the German Luftwaffe

November 14th, 1940: The German Luftwaffe conducts a major attack against the English city of Coventry, destroying the historic city center. The bombing code-named "Operation Moonlight Sonata" was primarily targeted at the armament factories located within the city, but also devastated civilian areas resulting in the most civilian casualties of German air raids in England. About 4,000 buildings were destroyed, among them the famous St. Michaels Cathedral from the 14th Century. Prime Minister Winston Churchill personally visited the ruins and subsequently increased the carpet bombing of German cities. Therefore Hitler's dream of forcing England to its knees took a disastrous turn. Instead of occupying the UK the German leadership had to increase their own lines of defense who soon would no longer be a match for Allied air superiority.
