December 19th, 1965 -Re-election of French President de Gaulle

 

December 19th, 1965: In France, General Charles de Gaulle, seen here at a press conference in 1958, is re-elected French president with 55.19% of the vote in the second voting round. Representative of the Free France in London, during the Second World War, he was put in charge of forming a government in Paris, as a result of the crisis in Algeria in 1958, which after a constitutional reform, should establish the so-called Fifth Republic. On December 21st, 1958, for the first time, de Gaulle was elected as President of the Republic. Not only did he lead the French colonies to independence, but he also called for an independence from the United States and for France to establish itself as a nuclear power. As a founding member of the European Economic Community, he promoted the reconciliation with former war enemy Germany and a resumption of friendly relations between the two countries.
