September 26th, 1943 - Catholic Church in Germany protests against euthanasia

September 26th 1943: In a pastoral letter, the Catholic Church in Germany vehemently protests against euthanasia. The killing of "unworthy life" was the Nazi leaderships idea of murdering people with mental illness or hereditary diseases, as well as racially undesirable people; it was repeatedly the subject of contention within the Catholic clergy. Famous in this context, is the sermon of the Bishop of Münster, Clemens August Graf von Galen. In August 1941 he publicly denounced the Nazis killing operations which had the cover name "T 4". Although the killings were suspended temporarily after his public address, more than 100,000 people, including many children, fell victim to the euthanasia program. While so-called Aryans, at least in part, received medical preliminary tests, they were entirely abandoned for those affected who were of Jewish descent, resulting in an even more radical implementation of the “Final Solution of the Jewish Question”, a plan stemming from the Wannsee Conference in 1942.
