Jahrestag

August 7th, 1964 - Beginning of the Vietnam War

On August 7th, 1964 U.S. Congress decides to take military action in Vietnam, in order to protect the pro-American government in the south, from the country's guerrilla war waged by the Viet Cong. The U.S., which already had military advisers stationed in South Vietnam, accuses communist North Vietnam led by Ho Chi Ming, of supporting the war of the Vietcong. U.S. troops are therefore trying block Vietcong supply lines, resorting to rigorous bombing attacks in 1965, claiming many victims among the civilian population and causing an international wave of protests and outrage against U.S. policy in Indochina.
