Jahrestag

June 8th, 1928 - Kuomingtang-troops capture Beijing

From 1115 to 1911 the capital of the dominant imperial dynasties of China was Beijing. After the fall of the last emperor in 1912, China becomes a republic and Nanjing becomes center and headquarters of the National Chinese forces under General Chang Kay Chek. After World War I his troops are opposing territorial claims by the newly organized Soviet Union after the collapse of the tsarist empire, but also against the communist movement in their own country under the leadership of Mao Tse-tung, as well as against warlords, who control parts of the country, such as Beijing. On June 8th, 1928 the nationalist Chinese troops conquer the city. Chang Kay Chek becomes president, officially names Nanjing capital and renames Beijing to "Beiping" (northern peace). A symbolic act to point out that the old imperial city will now no longer be China’s capital.
