September 9th, 1976 – Mao dies

On September 9th, the "Big Chairman", Chinese state and party leader Mao Zedong dies. In 1949 the Communists had taken over in China under the rule of Mao. In 1951 the first demonstration of power takes place, as Chinese associations intervene in the Korean War, repelling South Korean and American troops all the way back to the 38th degree of latitude. Maos reign is marked by many violent campaigns that were supposed to drive the country forward but also to eliminate political opponents. In May 1956 Mao initiated the Hundred Flowers Movement: He eased the censorship of intellectuals in order to get new ideas. But Mao's policy was criticized heavily and he had to stop the movement. Identified as "enemies of the people" these employees were sacked and replaced by new communist cadres from the peasant classes. Mismanagement in many parts of China's economy was the result due to the mostly unskilled leadership. “The Great Leap Forward” was the official policy slogan from 1958 to early 1962. The goal was to turn China at the expense of agriculture into an industrial superpower. In every backyard small iron stoves started to appear but they did not boost the economy. It resulted in the largest famine caused by humans in history. 20 to 40 million people perished. With his taking a swim in the Yangtze Mao launched the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution in 1966. On the surface it was Mao’s goal to smash the reactionary tendencies in particular among the party cadres and intelligentsia. But in reality however it provided the excuse to eliminate internal party rivals. Mao incited youths known as Red Guards against the rightist to monitor and denounce their parents and teachers. Countless former pillars of the state were murdered or seriously injured and exposed to humiliating treatments by fanatical masses and. During this ten-year civil war-like cultural revolution over seven million people die. When Mao died in 1976 44-72 million people had perished during political campaigns dictatorial exercises of power and failed economic policy.
