May 11th, 1960 – Kidnapping of Adolf Eichmann

During the 1950’s reign of Juan and Evita Peron, Argentina becomes an important refuge for Nazi criminals in Latin America. This is no accident, as the Perons are closely affiliated with the Spanish dictator Francisco Franco. Adolf Eichmann, a senior logistics associate in the Reich Security Main Office who swiftly carried out Hitlers orders of the so-called "Final Solution of the Jewish Question" was hiding in Argentina as well. On May 11th 1960 he is tracked down by Israeli agents in Argentina kidnapped and brought to Israel. A few days later Israeli Prime Minister David Ben Gurion announces before a cheering Knesset that one of the greatest Nazi war criminals had been captured. But the kidnapping of Eichmann who is tried and sentenced to death in Israel leads to serious diplomatic tensions between Argentina and Israel. Not even a personal letter from Ben Gurion to the Argentine president Frondizi can put the tensions aside. Through the mediation of the UN the conflict is finally resolved.
