September 16th, 1891 - Karl Dönitz is born


On September 16th, 1891 Karl Dönitz is born. In 1945, Dönitz is on trial as one of the major war criminals before the Nuremberg Tribunal. An unconditional partisan of Hitlers Nazi party Admiral Dönitz quickly rises within the Navy after 1933. In 1936 he becomes the "leader of the U-boats" in 1939 Rear Admiral then Admiral and eventually in 1943 Grand Admiral and Commander of the Navy. In the naval war against the Allied convoys the Dönitz-led U-boat fleet succeeded to temporarily interrupt the British supply routes completely. The U-boat war as well as the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. are important reasons for the U.S. to enter the war. While Germany lies in ruins the ever faithful including Grand Admiral Dönitz still stand by their leader. In his 1945 testament Hitler appoints Dönitz as his successor and Reichs-President. After the unconditional surrender on May 8th1945 which Dönitz announced over the radio he is arrested and brought before the Nuremberg War Crimes Tribunal. The court sentences him to 10 years in prison In 1956 he was released from the war criminals prison in Berlin-Spandau.
