October 21st, 1969 - Willy Brandt is elected Chancellor

 

On Oct 21st, 1969, In Germany Willy Brandt is elected Chancellor for the first time by the delegates of the SPD/FDP coalition. Since 1961, Brandt had been chancellor candidate of the SPD party. Brandt was previously the almost charismatic mayor of West Berlin. In 1961, he had calmly led the city through the crisis of the building of the wall. The prelude to his rise to Chancellor was the great coalition between the CDU and SPD from 1966 to 1969, in which Brandt acted as the foreign minister. Brandts government program in 1969 was marked by reforms. The motto was "dare more democracy". Brandt's biggest project in foreign policy was the Ostpolitik (East Policy) by communicating with the Soviet Union East Germany (GDR) and Poland. (original sound bite) In 1974 after Brandt's close associate Günter Guillaume was identified as an East German spy he resigned.
