September 24th, 1964 - Willy Stoph succeeds Otto Grotewohl as East German Prime Minister

 

After 1945, the left-wing Social Democrat Otto Grotewohl, together with Wilhelm Pieck, becomes the founding father of the Socialist Unity Party (SED). From 1946 to 1954, together with Pieck, he is President of the SED and from 1949 on, East German Prime Minister. After Grotewohl’s death in 1964, Willy Stoph takes over and becomes Chairman of the Ministers of the GDR. During the uprising in East Germany in 1953, Stoph is minister of the interior and he proves to be a hardliner with the insurgents. This made him eligible for high office, and he quickly rises within the nomenclature of party and state. Stoph uses his position to establish relations between East and West anew. In 1967 he writes a letter to Chancellor Kiesinger, but its Willy Brandt who finally will be willing to discuss new East- and Germany policy with Stoph. Their meetings in Kassel and Erfurt help to move the relaxation process between the two German states along. '
