March 4th, 1933 - Roosevelt takes office

On March 4th, 1933, Franklin D. Roosevelt begins his first term as U.S. president. He was the only president of the United States, who, because of the Second World War, expanded the then voluntary restriction of the presidential term from two terms to four terms. Domestically, his policy was designed to tackle the dramatic consequences of the global economic crisis through social and economic policies. That program became to be known as "New Deal". He already announced the "Good Neighbor Policy, his goal in foreign policy, in his inaugural speech: All countries should be cooperative, good-neighborly, with equal trading relations. Despite formal neutrality (neutrality laws) Roosevelt had been supporting Great Britain since the start of World War II in 1939, including the Lend-Lease Act, which enabled the "loan" supply, from arms and equipment to entire warships, to England. (original sound bite) Only the Japanese attack on the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii and the German declaration of war on December 11th, 1941 provided for a change of mood of the U.S. public and allowed Roosevelt to enter the war side by side with Great Britain and the Soviet Union. Several conferences were held to discuss war strategies and aims. (original sound bite) In 1941, Roosevelt and Churchill met on a warship in the Atlantic. The Atlantic Charter described the principles of freedom and human rights based on a post-war order. It anticipated the foundation charter of the United Nations. Even during the war, Roosevelt approached the development of a just postwar order and drove the creation of the United Nations in San Francisco in 1944 forward. In 1945, just before the end of World War II, Roosevelt died.
