August 11th, 1919 - Weimar Constitution is announced

On August 11th, 1919 the Weimar Constitution was signed by the Reich President Friedrich Ebert and promulgated. (original sound bite) Shortly before it had been decided upon, after lengthy discussions of the German National Assembly in Weimar. The Constitution was the first practical democratic constitution in Germany. It established a federal republic with a hybrid of presidential and a parliamentary systems of government. Here, the 10th anniversary of the Weimar Constitution in 1929. For the first time, fundamental and human rights were in effect in Germany. (The Nazis de facto repealed that in 1933). Numerous articles were incorporated into the 1949 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Germany, and still apply today.
