November 13th, 1959 - Demolition of Potsdam City Palace

 

Up until 1945, the city center of Potsdam was marked by the city palace of the Hohenzollern and the Garrison Church. Potsdams character as a garrison town was closely connected with the City Palace. See here is a military parade in the 1930s. In 1933 shortly after the takeover by the Nazis the "Day of Potsdam" was held at the Garrison Church and the City Palace. Due to heavy bombing the city was severely destroyed in 1945. On November 13th 1959 the City Council decided to demolish the castle and the surrounding area including the Garrison Church. The center was redesigned despite many protests. By 2012 the city palace will be rebuilt in modified form and serve as headquarters of the Brandenburg state parliament.
