November 18th, 1919 – Dagger legend spread by Hindenburg

The Weimar National Assembly had set up a committee to investigate the question of war guilt. On November 18th, 1919 the former head of the Supreme Command, General Paul von Hindenburg was invited, seen here during World War I, with General Erich Ludendorff. Hindenburg spread the dagger legend: The German army during World War I was literally "undefeated in the field." They had been "stabbed in the back" by left-wing forces, who started revolutions and incited German soldiers to become insubordinate. In reality, the German army was at its end in 1918. Hindenburg himself had asked for ceasefire negotiations. The dagger legend was exploited and used against the SPD, and decisively encouraged the rise of National Socialism.
