March 30th, 1930 - Heinrich Brüning becomes chancellor

On March 30th, 1930, the Center politician Heinrich Brüning becomes chancellor in Germany. He first forms a minority government, and following the general elections of September 14th, 1930 he forms a new cabinet tolerating the SPD party. Brüning attempted to get a handle on mass unemployment and poverty, a result of the Great Depression in Germany, through a policy of deflation. He believes in the rehabilitation of state finances and a balanced state budget. His austerity policy, which threatens to increase economic problems further, does not find a majority in the Reichstag. Brüning pushes it through anyway, by falling back on the emergency powers of the Reichs-President. Badly misgoverning the Reichstag, Brünings Emergency-Policy triggers a fatal mechanism which advances the inner corrosion of the parliamentary system at the end of the Weimar Republic.
