May 6th, 1937 – Lakehurst disaster

 

May 6th, 1937: During a landing approach at Lakehurst, New Jersey near New York, the German zeppelin ‘LZ 129 Hindenburg’ burst into flames. The disaster was a turning point in the history of German airships. The highly flammable hydrogen posed a non-calculable risk to the transport of passengers, as 35 people perish in Lakehurst, including several crew members. Long deemed as a prestige object by the Nazis, passenger transportation in zeppelins was halted.
