April 9th, 2003 - Iraqi President Saddam Hussein is overthrown

April 9th, 2003: The first tanks of the coalition troops under U.S. leadership, arrive in the morning hours at the suburbs of Baghdad, which had previously been bombed heavily. A short time later Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein is overthrown. He had tyrannized the country as a leader of the extremely violent Baathist party for 24 years. Early in his tyranny, he plunged his people in to a bloody war against the Islamic revolution in Iran. Hussein in 1983, despite international protests, did not shy away from the use of chemical weapons in the war against Iran. Even in his own country he ruled with an iron fist. Using poison gas against the Kurdish minority, he violently suppressed all opposition and wanted to be celebrated as a benevolent father of his country. After his fall on April 9th, 2003 the former dictator disappeared. In December 2003 he was discovered in a hole near Tikrit. He had tried to disguise himself with tangled hair and a long beard. In October 2005 the first trial against Saddam Hussein began. On November 5th, 2006 he was convicted by a special tribunal and sentenced to death. The court found it evident that Saddam Hussein was personally responsible for a massacre of 148 Shiites in July 1982. On December 30th, 2006, the former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein was executed, for crimes against humanity, to death by hanging. U.S. President Bush welcomed the execution. German Chancellor Angela Merkel on the other hand criticized the death penalty.
