October 18th, 1977 – The GSG9 frees hostage in Mogadishu

October 18th, 1977: At the airport of Mogadishu, all hostages of the Lufthansa airliner "Landshut", who were kidnapped by a commando of Palestinian terrorists, are freed by the GSG 9, an anti-terrorist unit of the Federal Republic of Germany. Before, the captain of the "Landshut " was shot and killed during the hijacking, by the leader of the terror squads. The hijacking was intended to force the release of the in 1972 imprisoned heads of the Red Army Faction. It failed because of the successful hostage rescue, but the so-called "German Autumn" still ended in bloodshed. The RAF leaders committed suicide in the prison Stuttgart-Stammheim; the president of the German employers association, Hanns Martin Schleyer, had previously been kidnapped and murdered by terrorists. During the seven-minute operation by the GSG 9 in Mogadishu, three of the four hostage-takers die, a GSG 9 man and a flight attendant, here seen on their way back to Germany, were injured.
